Discovering the 60th Venice Biennale

Discovering the 60th Venice Biennale: “Foreigners Everywhere” with AMG Attorneys.

The Venice Biennale is not just an art exhibition; it is a cultural phenomenon that transforms the historic city of Venice into a global stage for contemporary art. As the 60th edition unfolds in 2024 under the evocative title “Foreigners Everywhere”, this year’s Biennale promises to explore themes of identity, migration, and the complexities of global interconnectedness.

Celebrating its 60th edition, the Venice Biennale in 2024 is themed “Foreigners

Everywhere”. This title invites a deep exploration into the concept of "foreignness" and its multifaceted implications in a globalized world. It challenges traditional notions of borders and belonging, highlighting the fluid nature of identity and the pervasive influence of migration and cultural exchange.

Key Venues: Giardini della Biennale and Arsenale della Biennale

The Biennale’s main exhibitions are held at two principal venues: the Giardini della Biennale and the Arsenale della Biennale. These locations serve as the central hub for the Biennale’s artistic presentations.

However, the Biennale’s influence extends throughout Venice, with temporary pavilions and exhibitions scattered across the city, creating a dialogue between art and the urban landscape.

Spanish Pavilion: “Pinacoteca Migrante”

For the 2024 Venice Biennale, Spain’s Pavilion features “Pinacoteca Migrante,” an innovative project curated by Agustín Pérez Rubio and created by Sandra Gamarra Heshiki. This exhibition redefines the museum experience by focusing on migration. Gamarra Heshiki, an artist based near Madrid, transforms the pavilion into a provocative gallery that explores hidden histories through classical painting.

The exhibition spans five thematic rooms, addressing topics like colonial distortions, racism, and mestizo identity. A highlight is the Migrant Garden, which displays twelve painted replicas of colonial monuments, offering a counter-narrative to traditional historical perspectives and highlighting the experiences of displaced

individuals.

Swiss Pavilion: A Satirical Examination of National Identity

The Swiss Pavilion features the work of Swiss-Brazilian artist Guerreiro do Divino Amor, who presents “Super Superior Civilizations.” This exhibition, divided into two parts— Miracle of Helvetia and Roma Talismano—explores the absurdities of national self-representation through satire and allegory. Guerreiro do Divino Amor’s work critiques the clichés and chauvinistic tendencies inherent in national narratives, offering a playful yet poignant commentary on media, power, and collective imagination in today’s polarized climate.

Belgian Pavilion: A Kaleidoscope of Myth and Modernity

The Belgian Pavilion, curated by the collective Denicolai & Provoost, Antoinette Jattiot, Nord, and Speculoos, presents “Petticoat Government”. This multidisciplinary project blends art, architecture, typography, and cartography to create a dynamic and immersive experience. Drawing on folkloric giants from Belgium, France, and Spain, the pavilion features performative elements and an intricate staging of mythological figures. The Belgian Pavilion stands as a place of passage, where contemporary myths and historical stories converge, offering a rich tapestry of narratives and perspectives.
